Overview

One of the few major churches in Hamburg not to be destroyed during WWII bombings. The interior is bright and airy, with a balcony and windowed boxes. For Baroque - it is very tasteful and understated - really beautiful There are three composers associated with this church: CPE Bach (musical director and buried here), Tellermann (also musical director) and Brahms (baptised here) - so its musical history is very important, and they often have concerts here, played on the exceptional organs (there are three). I heard Bach's St John's Passion here in 1985 - amazing! This time, when we arrived, a service was taking place. When we entered (via disabled entrance) we were shown to pews where we could wait until the service was over if we wished. Luckily we did - and got a fabulous organ concert of two pieces (one by Brahms) after the sermon. The church tower is open for able bodied people, to give great views of Hamburg - my husband climbed it to take some photos.

we went by mobility scooter from our hotel, and did not check the parking

Access

The main entrance is not accessible, but there is a small entrance for disabled around the side - ring for entry. From there, step-free access to the ground floor of the church. No step free access to the balconies or tower.

Toilets

Accessible toilet by the disabled entrance. Small, and a tight fit for the mobility scooter, but it was possible. Grab rails. I was just impressed they had anything!

Staff

Volunteers were very friendly, helpful and informative

Anything else you wish to tell us?

If you get a chance to catch ANY music being played here, make sure you don't miss it. It would be worth sitting through a whole service for (not just the quarter hour we had) We spent an hour here and loved every minute
