Amazing, accomodating and friendly staff - However access is an issue

Overview

The member of staff that took our order during the visit was super! Extremely accommodating to our group of individuals with learning disabilities. Rephrased language to a level that was very easy to understand (e.g do you want you sandwich to be hold or cold, do you want cheese on your sandwich? rather than "cheese and toasted". The price of the food is most reasonable and allowed our individuals to get a sandwich/salad bowl as well as drink for under £8. The main issue is access as there is step to get into the venue with steps also being located in the queuing area which would make it challenging to enter for anyone in a wheelchair and was assessed to cause minimal difficult for an individual with vision impairment.

Transport & Parking

There is no parking for subway, however, it is located nicely in a quiet area of the city centre, around the corner from the main town bus stop. A pay and display car park is located around the corner from subway.

Access

The signage is very clear and stands out well due to the good colour scheme of the sign. In order to get into the venue, there is a small step from the footpath into the shop which was assessed to cause a small barrier of access for an individual with a vision impairment. Inside subway, there is also another step down to the till which is quite large and caused some issues again for our individuals who were less stable on their feet.

Toilets

The toilet in subway is a large disabled friendly toilet, however, the location of the toilet is in a very badly designed area as the door opens outwards into the area individuals stand to queue and order food. To use the toilet, staff need to be asked to unlocked the door.

Staff

The staff member that served us was incredibly helpful. They utilised the menu options on the glass counter to point to and aid our individuals to choose and identify their choice of bread and sauce independently. The staff member was very patient and ensured our individuals correctly gained the sandwich they desired by verbally addressing some of the salad options available rather than leaving our customers to struggle to see over into salad boxes.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The service we received was amazing and we were blown away by the effort the staff member made to adapt his regular service to accommodate our individuals needs and increase their independence. The service we received resulted in a letter being written to the management of subway and we would most definitely return this service.
