    About

Immerse yourself in our imaginative and exciting galleries, from the history of healthcare to the advances that have shaped the way we look after ourselves, and each other. Wander through the grimy streets of Victorian Leeds, watch gruesome operations taking place in our 19th-century operating theatre, visit a seventies-style sexual health clinic, chart how well the world responds to crisis, and discover the medical innovations that changed the world. Through play, creativity, talks, experiences, social events and formal education, we’re both a place to pay fitting tribute to our health heroes and inspire the next generation of big thinkers.

Sheffield Train Station Trip To Leeds Thackray Medical Museum

Brilliant, really cheap trip if you have bus passes for northern train line and they were also accepted on the Leeds buses. Friendly staff in the museum who offered a lot of help, family friendly environment to visit and they welcome all groups and are really accommodating. Really interesting with all the old medical equipment and it was sensory friendly with head phones and things to smell, see and touch. Tickets for the museum were £11.99 but as we were a group from a learning center we emailed groups@thackraymuseum.org and we got the tickets for £6.95

    Thackray Medical Museum

The medical museum has it's own car park with disabled bays, and is situated on several main bus routes and a main road, making it easy to get to despite being a long way from the train station. The entrance to the museum is level, and while the first door is manual (but permanently propped open), the second is automated (swings outwards). The desk is right by front door, and it would appear sensory kits are available for autistic visitors. All displays are fully wheelchair accessible, although some are narrow in places, with tight corners. Some displays are too high to see from a wheelchair, but most are at an accessible height. There is lift access to all floors, and the lift is large. While there are disabled toilets, there is also a full changing place available in the basement. Considering that ableism is an issue in medicine, the subject of disability was mostly well-handled if under-represented.
