Overview

The Clovenfords Hotel is in a village on the outskirts of Galashiels. It's a traditional pub serving food and offering a ground floor accessible bedroom with wheels in shower. I was wanting to visit the Scottish Borders and really struggled to find ANY accessible accommodation in the Galashiels area/ Borders area. I didn't see any access reviews for this hotel so I took a leap of faith and booked. It turned out to be a real gem. What a find!

Transport & Parking

5

The X62 bus from Edinburgh to Galashiels stops directly outside the front door, see photo, at the Clovenfords Hotel stop. The bus into Edinburgh is across the road, it's stop is Meigle Row. At present during the day there are 2 buses per hour, Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and evenings there is 1 bus per hour. The journey time from Galashiels is 10 minutes on the bus. Nearest train station is Galashiels, a step free station with regular trains into Edinburgh. The pub has a spacious car park.

Access

5

There is a step free entrance via a permanent ramp. The pub is on the ground floor and also is one of their guest bedrooms, room 6. The pub has free standing tables and chairs. Also outside picnic bend style seating. Room 6 The accessible room is room 6. It is accessed via a ramp and is on the ground floor. From the main entrance the room is on your immediate right and the door to the bar on the left. It is a manual door which opens into a spacious bedroom, with twin beds. One of my favourite things about it was the quality of the furniture. There was a large double wardrobe, desk and chair, a suitcase stand which made it so easy to unpack, and bedside tables. Plenty of storage space. The en suit bathroom had a wheels in shower. There were grab rails and a free standing shower chair. There is no emergency cord. Everything was well maintained, clean and tidy.

Toilets

There is an accessible toilet in the bar, but I did not use this.

Staff

Staff were amazing. Super friendly and welcoming. Showed a genuine interest and answered my questions about getting about. They had reserved a table for me both night for dinner. On my first night they went and asked the people sitting there to move. Service was exceptional. Staff were warm and welcoming. I was advised that there was a wedding reception taking place on my 2nd evening there and there might be noise. It was fine but it was nice they were so considerate and let me know.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I had a wonderful time. Would definitely stay here again. The first night my spoons were very low with travelling and I went to bed by 8.30pm and went straight off to sleep. The second night with the wedding party, they were celebrating in a room in the back and there was minimal noise. A lovely surprise was the wedding party had a piper playing and he was almost immediately outside of my bedroom window, see photo. It was late afternoon and it was so lovely, made my stay memorable. If you are staying in the Borders I can't recommend this enough. Would love to go back.
