    The egg theatre

    About

Since opening in 2005, the egg has provided a unique venue for children, young people and families to experience a year-round programme of theatre. The egg is a nationally recognised hub for exceptional outreach work with young people, community groups, schools, universities and colleges across the country. The egg offers an extravaganza of performances throughout the year, including award winning shows such as Little Mermaid, Ballet Central and the ever popular Snow Mouse. A range of frequent workshops and participatory sessions are on offer for children aged 2-18, from Play in a Week (ages 7-12), five days of fun-filled theatrical workshops culminating in an original performance for an invited audience, to the Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School, offering specialised training in both acting and backstage disciplines for all young people. The Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School (TRBTS) provides an insight into the professional world of theatre and gives young individuals the opportunity to be part of something bigger. TRBTS is the only youth theatre in Bath with open access to a professional working theatre. The theatre knowledge that exists within the building is second to none. TRBTS runs weekly sessions for young people aged 5-18, offering a range of skills workshops in a variety of theatre disciplines and creative arts. The youngest members engage with the arts through creative play – nurturing their development. From aged 13 upwards, members can choose to specialise in Acting or Backstage, working with professional theatre-makers to create high quality productions in the egg and other venues. All of the shows produced are supported by industry professional production and creative teams, including: costume and set designers, sound designers, composers, stage management and lighting designers. The egg also boasts an exciting partnership with Bath College aimed at students aged 16 and over. Drawing on 10+ years of the egg’s creative endeavours, plus years of educational expertise from the college, our collaboration strives to create the optimum conditions for art and learning to thrive. The course is full time and provides graduating students with the equivalent of three A-levels. Adults with a passion for theatre can join our Summer School for Actors, a week-long intensive summer school that gives aspiring actors the chance to develop skills, grow confidence and build a robust toolkit to fall back on in performance. The egg building is fully accessible, with flat access at street level, a push-button door for automatic opening, a passenger lift, a fully accessible toilet and the capability of hosting up to eight wheelchair users. We are proud hosts of regularly scheduled assisted performances, and coordinators of Space for Me, a theatre making club for children and young adults who have a particular need affecting their day-to-day life; everyone is welcome. If visitors are feeling peckish, they can head to the egg café. Run by the same owners as the nearby pub The Garrick’s Head, the café is situated inside the theatre’s foyer and is the perfect environment for parents and children to relax and have fun. Grow ups can enjoy sipping on hot drinks, cold drinks (or even alcoholic drinks!), whilst the little ones nestle down in the reading corner or go wild in the ball pit. Not to mention they have a seasonal (and locally sourced!) menu, from croissants filled with gooey Nutella, to goat’s cheese Paninis dripping with warm red onion marmalade, your taste buds will thank you for eating at the egg. The egg theatre – a little place with big ambition.
