Disabled Travellers Midsomer Murders tour part 2

CRENDON has a long historical record, so let’s offer you some historical notes for your delightful visit to this charming little village, all concentrated along High Street.
The village was known as Credeone in the time of the doomsday book of 1086,:and it
meant Creoda’s Hill, and has only been known as Long CRENDON since the English civil war, the Long added to refer to its length at that time.
In 1218 it was granted a royal charter to hold a weekly market here, and at that time it shared the right to be one place where “needles” could be made, and in 1544 a Christopher Greening was said to be the first to make steel needles, and he became the tenant of Dragons Farm. Needle makers cottages were built, such as 7-9 High Street.
However, the nearby town of Thame partitioned the King to close the then very successful market of CRENDON, and a little later, the charter was indeed taken off them that allowed a market to be held here, and the only market remained in Thame.
St Mary’s church dates from the 1100’s with signs of Norman foundations, and has undergone renovations in later years.
There are nearly 100 listed buildings here, and many of these add to the charm of High Street.
This of course helped to make the village a popular place for recording many episodes of Midsomer Murders, such as
“Garden of Death” when the church house became the village meeting place.
The church house was also used in “Tainted Fruit” when it was the village shop.
In “Blood Wedding” it became the Midsomer District Council Library.
In the episode of “Blood on the saddle” the Eight Bells inn was called Florey Arms.
Other episode were made for “Death and Dreams”, “Things that go bump in the night”, “The Axeman cometh”, “Not in my back garden”, The Christmas Haunting” and “The House in the woods”.
Let’s now take a look at Long CRENDON.
Coming from Thame, we arrived at Long CRENDON, and over to our left, there was a small parking area, and we turned left here to run down Frogmore Lane (photo 1) and as it looked interesting we drove along to pass a few nice cottages (photo 2) before turning round and coming back, we quickly took (photo 3).
Going straight across at cross roads, we ran down High Street (photo 4) with a beautiful old thatched cottage to our right. A lane ran off to our right (photo 5) Jesses Lane, then a very photogenic view opened up to by Wainwright (photo 6).
High Street now became very attractive with a number of colourful thatched cottages holding our gaze (photo 7) before more caught our attention (photo 8) the centre thatched cottage was used in one episode.
Across the road from the square many of the cottages were covered in gaily coloured rose bushes (photo 9) before we arrived at The Eight Bells (photo 10) and this became Florey arms in “Blood on the saddle”
We loved the thatch on a long beautiful cottage just a little further on (photo 12) which really has character (photo 13).
The High Street then becomes a No through road (photo 14) just before St Mary’s church (photo 15) and turning left here (photo 16) we finally left CRENDON behind us.
What a beautiful way to continue to our next destination, for Chearsley, so before turning by church, we set our SAT NAV direction. SAT NAV. HP18 0DJ
