Established in 1902, The Gaiety is one of Scotland’s oldest theatres. After a forced closure in 2009, there was a real threat the doors would never re-open but, four years later, The Gaiety was reborn as a social enterprise run entirely for the benefit of the local community, with an overall vision to grow the performing arts and culture in Ayr and South Ayrshire. Unlike most theatres in the UK we’re largely run through voluntary effort supported by a small core staff team with an ambition to do much more than simply re-open a building. Our vision to re-energise the performing arts in South Ayrshire will stimulate the cultural life and economic prosperity of the area. In February 2016, The Gaiety will undergo a £2.4 million capital refurbishment which will include; increased accessible seating throughout the Main Auditorium and the installation of an induction loop to improve patrons’ experience.
