    Appearances can be deceptive

    The museum is situated in the renowned Anstruther Harbour, a short distance away from the famous chippy. It tells the story of the Scottish fishing industry, its boats, harbours and communities. It is quite deceptive from the outside as it doesn’t look very big but it has an amazing number of galleries spread over several old buildings. Given the age of the buildings, they have done an amazing job on accessibility, with further improvements in the pipeline. Well worth a visit - and carers and accompanied children are free.

    Wheelchair access

    Regularly visit cafe. Staff very friendly and helpful. Refurbishment means easy to get wheelchair to all tables. Great selection of food and drinks. Easy to take wheelchair round the majority of the museum, only the fisherman's cottage was iinaccessible for the wheelchair.

    Disabled Access at The Scottish Fisheries Museum

    The main Museum entrance has ramped access with handrails. The Museum itself is across two floors with ramped access throughout, apart from the Fisherman’s Cottage which is accessed by a stair from the courtyard. This space can also be viewed from the Days of Steam Gallery via a window. There are some areas where the ramp could be considered steep. There is a variety of seating throughout the Museum. All the labels in the Museum are at least 14 point Sans Serif font or larger. In our temporary exhibitions, large print labels are available. A Visual Story with pictures of the museum and information to help you prepare for your visit is available on the Museum website. A sensory backpack is available to borrow free of charge on arrival (subject to availability). Sensory touch tours can be booked in advance by contacting the Museum.

    The museum has one accessible toilet off of the museum shop and there is a changing table in the lockable unisex toilets to the right as you go into gallery 1. There are other toilet facilities off of the museum shop, gallery 1 and gallery 7.
