    The Botanist

    Cardiff

    A wonderful dining experience

    Date of visit: January 2026

I am a disabled person and a carer or friend of a disabled person and a general supporter of disabled access. I have experience of challenges around: a hidden impairment, accessing toilets, dexterity or coordination and moving around.

A huge restaurant/bar with ample access features throughout, from the entrances to bathroom facilities.

    Disabled Access In and Around

    Good

As a wheelchair user I booked a table in advance and requested easy access to my table, the restaurant booked a table on the upper level which is accessed via a lift, balcony and 2 sets of doors (1 is accessibility friendly, the other was not) very near to the disabled bathroom which was perfect for my needs. The lift to the upper level is located outside of the restaurant building itself and inside the Mermaid Quay Center Manager which also houses public toilets and the entrance to The Glee Club. After exiting the lift on the second floor, you will need to use the ramp to access the balcony - this ramp isn't the steepest, but it can be difficult to navigate solo. I needed help from my partner to open the door to the restaurant itself as half of it was locked both inside and outside (double doors) and very heavy and awkward to do independently. The second level of the restaurant is staggered and as such it has a short flight of 3-4 steps, for this reason I would recommend booking in advance and notifying the staff of your access requirements.

Accessible facilities: Lift to some areas, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals, Step-free access to most areas

    Parking & Transport

    Poor

I travelled to this place by walk or wheel

The restaurant itself is located in Cardiff Bay, right on the waterfront so there isn't any dedicated parking available for this restaurant. There are carparks dotted around the bay, however this would include a fair distance of walking/wheeling to the venue. There is a train station a distance away on foot that is accessible friendly, however anyone self-propelling would struggle with a solo visit as the pavements around the outlying streets are horrendous, to put it lightly. Broken slabs, cobblestones jutting out and numerous obstructions litter the walkways. There are also links to public bus services nearby which are a shorter distance on foot than most of the carparks and train station.

    Accessible Toilets

I did not use the restaurant facilities on my visit, however the block that they were located inside of looked large and easily accessible from where I was seated next to it.

    Excellent

Staff were very friendly and accomodating. They had a table reserved with a chair removed for my arrival and it was located within a very short distance of the accessible toilets.
