Sitting within spacious grounds, Tolquhon as been described as one of the most beautiful castle in Scotland. Sir William Forbes, who adapted and expanded an existing tower in the 150s, intended its construction to be an impressive residence, though he incorporated plenty of gunloops to deter any hostile visitors. This is a great building to explore, including a secret compartment in the laird's quarters where he hid his valuables. Opening times: 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Wed to Sun, 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 4pm). Closed for lunch 12 noon to 1pm. 1 Oct to 31 Mar: Closed
