Overview

I am a full time manual wheelchair user and as usual did research on the city’s accessibility prior to traveling which was universally positive in guide books, blogs and on YouTube. Because of the age of the buildings particularly within the inner sector 1, which is where most of the tourist attractions are located, accessible disabled toilets are in short supply and difficult to locate. Most museums have them, but you may have to search the floors. They are in short supply in cafes and bars, including eating places. And when they can be found, they are invariably locked with a EuroKey, which is kept behind a counter somewhere! For a city that likes to badge itself ‘barrier free’ - toilets are the exception. You can find them in an Underground station, but it’s not unusual to find an attendant who insists on you producing a European disabled card, which obviously the UK doesn’t have! The good news is that for wheelchair users the city is both flat and free from curbs. Entrances to restaurants, cafes and shop are mostly step free but don’t appear to understand that you may need a toilet!
