Overview

You may come to realise how much it can rain in Grasmere! At times therefore it is good to have an idea of some venues which you can enjoy whilst keeping dry. Dove Cottage was home to Poet William Wordsworth and the adjoining museum is fantastic for learning about the history of this area. Whilst I visited the venue as a power chair user this historic venue seems willing to do their best to accommodate all disabilities. The venue is also free to access if you claim Universal Credit. From the perspective of a wheelchair user there is a guide on the website which is well thought out and explains everything. There is disabled parking directly off the A591. From here it is a short wheel to the cafe which provides disabled access to the house, garden and the whole museum. Dove Cottage is kept as it was when Wordsworth lived there so only offers limited access. The museum is fully accessible except for the small viewing platform on the top level. I enjoyed the cafe but benefitted most from the open plan museum space. The display space is well lit and easy to navigate. It is possible to get into the lower sections of garden but not the elevated parts. There is a disabled toilet which we had no issues with. I would say next time in Grasmere it is certainly worth a visit.
