Together we have made 200k accessible toilets safer!

A graphic design featuring the Euan's Guide Red Cord Card and text reading 200,000 accessible toilets are now safer thanks to Red Cord Cards!

We’re so proud to announce a major milestone in our national Safer Toilets campaign: the distribution of 200,000 Red Cord Cards!

That’s 200,000 accessible toilets made safer thanks to YOU, our incredible community, who have ordered and distributed our Red Cord Cards.

This achievement marks a significant step forward in ensuring that accessible toilets across the UK are safe and functional for disabled people. What started as a simple idea to make accessible loos safer has grown into a nationwide movement, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue this mission with you.

    A growing crisis in accessibility

However, our milestone comes at a critical time. Data from our latest Access Survey highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the disabled community regarding toilet facilities:

    • Widespread need: 84% of respondents are accessible toilet users or know someone who is.
    • Infrastructure failures: 76% of users have encountered a facility they were unable to use.
    • Barriers to inclusion: 69% of disabled people have avoided a location entirely due to a lack of accessible toilets, while 59% have had to cut a trip short because facilities did not meet their needs.
    • Maintenance issues: 70% of respondents cited cleanliness, maintenance, and availability as the most common hurdles.

Why our Safer Toilets campaign matters

Unfortunately, the red emergency cord is all too often tied up, shortened or missing entirely, putting disabled people at risk when they are unable to reach the cord to call for help. By ordering and distributing your Red Cord Cards, you’re helping raise awareness of the importance of the emergency cord while making accessible toilets safer for disabled people.

    About Safer Toilets

What began as a grassroots initiative has evolved into a nationwide movement with Red Cord Cards being a common sight in UK museums, railway stations, cafes, and office buildings.

“I have always untied cords, but didn't know there was an official campaign to fix the problem! With the cards, hopefully they won't be retied out of reach in future.” - Euan’s Guide supporter

“I have been on the floor with the red cord out of reach. This is amazing!" - Euan’s Guide supporter

“I've hung loads of these cards. There are a few locations in my town - the original card is still hanging four years later! Proof that they work wonderfully at keeping people safe.” - Euan’s Guide supporter

Influencers regularly post their Red Cord Cards on Instagram and TikTok to highlight the importance of the emergency cord - we’re delighted to have had support from disabled influencer, Eliza Rain, who shared a post to Instagram today to celebrate us reaching 200,000 Red Cord Cards and raise awareness of the importance of the red emergency cord in accessible toilets.

    The journey doesn't stop here

While celebrating this 200,000 achievement, we know the work is far from over. We’re calling on businesses and individuals to continue supporting our Safer Toilets campaign to help keep accessible toilets as safe as possible so disabled people feel valued and welcome.

You can support the movement by ordering Red Cord Cards directly from our website to help raise awareness in your local communities at www.EuansGuide.com/SaferToilets.

If you’re a business, you can help disabled people know what to expect and plan their visits by sharing disabled access information on their own websites and on EuansGuide.com.

Disabled people, their families, friends and carers can review their local accessible loos on EuansGuide.com so other disabled people can plan with confidence and know what to expect.
