September review roundup

September review roundup article image

The September review roundup is packed full of new and exciting reviews, thanks to our fantastic volunteer reviewers - and this is only a small selection of the reviews that we’ve received this month!

If you've been somewhere - good or not so good -  please tell as many people as possible by  writing a review on Euan’s Guide.

Exploring the outdoors

Shirley Todd and her husband went for a wander around Drutie park in Aberdeen. They travelled there by bus and spent some time wandering in the park and Winter Gardens. As a wheelchair user, Shirley found the whole park and Winter Gardens very flat and easy to move around. They had a great day out.

Nell6568 visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park with her family, she highlighted the mobility scooter hire, and she may decide to do that next time. She mentions that some of the paths in the park are quite uneven and can be difficult to get over if you're a wheelchair user. There are plenty of toilets in the park, including an accessible toilet with lots of space and handrails if you need a little extra support. There’s also a variety of food and drink options at the cafe if you decide to grab a bite to eat whilst you're there. Sounds like a great day out for everyone!

Places to visit

If you’re a fan of going to the theatre then Fishworm highly recommended the Chelmsford theatre as a very accessible night out. The theatre is in the centre of town, so it’s easy to get to by public transport. There is accessible parking available, but it is slightly further away from the theatre and difficult to find. The accessible toilet in the theatre and the helpful and friendly staff made the whole visit very enjoyable and a great night out.

ALANMILLAR100 wrote a review about some of the new access improvements that have been made to the Crinnan canal. Alan tested out the new gradual ramp, which makes the canal accessible on both sides for wheelchair users. A great new accessible walkway which is open to everyone.

EmpowerWest visited a new Tenpin bowling alley which is part of Clydebank Shopping Centre. The group included a wheelchair user, and they were impressed with the accessibility of this new venue. The review includes some great photographs of the layout of the bowling alley.

Shiny visited Argyll beaver and wildlife centre in Lochgilphead and took part in a guided walk around the loch. As a mobility scooter user, they were pleased to find that the path around the loch is wide enough for a scooter or a power chair. There is also a hide where you can sit and watch for beavers, which is small but accessible to scooter and power chair users. The staff involved with the guided walk were both very helpful and keen to make it as accessible as possible. Thank you very much for your review!

Places to stay

Numis63 reviewed Brading Roman villa in Sandown and found it very accessible with ramps and very helpful staff. It's always great to find out somewhere is accessible when you're unsure about the access before visiting.

Further north in Inverness, Cbeuchley found a great place to stay at Haven Suites. The accommodation has ceiling hoists, profiling beds and a wet room shower available. The perfect stop to explore Inverness.

Places to eat

Ij was impressed with the views from Cafe Carlton in Edinburgh, where you can park at the top of the hill. There is a gravel path up to the café, which might be quite challenging for some manual wheelchair users without assistance.

Reliquit reviewed the Lighthouse restaurant in Milford on Sea. The restaurant is accessible through a wide, flat side entrance. The menu has mainly fresh dishes, although there are other options. You can sit inside or outside, depending on what you prefer, and the restaurant is dog friendly. The accessible toilet is a bit challenging to get to but specious once you get inside.

Review of the month is from Shiny who visited Argyll Beaver and wildlife visitors Centre which sounds like a really special place to spend some time. Thank you very much for your review Shirley and we look forward to seeing where you explore next.
