Beautiful escape to a real castle!!!

I had a one night stay here in October last year. I had an evening reception in Edinburgh and unhappy at the cost of hotels in the city I came across Barony Castle a short drive away for much less. A castle! I have always wanted to stay in a castle and couldn’t believe I was staying in a castle for less than a stay in an Edinburgh city hotel. Now the unfortunate thing with old buildings is that they aren’t very suitable for wheelchairs, especially castles. However, the staff were amazing in mitigating the accessibility shortcomings. Taking luggage to and from my car and the room, opening doors, even bringing breakfast to my room in the morning as I was not well enough to get down to the restaurant before it finished. The staff here are caring and considerate and if you are a lone traveller more than happy to have a blether with you. I had initially booked an accessible room. However it was quite a distance from the lift, and the floor wasn’t level, there were a couple of steep climbs in places and by the time I got to the room I was knackered. There was no way I could make the journey to the room and round the hotel without over-exerting myself, which was a real disappointment as the room was huge, with a massive bed, opulent decorations and a well-equipped wet room. Reception were able to move me to a different room closer to the lift but it wasn’t accessible but so long as I could get through the door I was happy to make do. In all seriousness though, the room only needed some grab rails putting by the toilet and shower and a drop down shower seat in the shower. The room was large enough to get around in my wheelchair and there was a space to store it, the bathroom was also large enough to get around in my wheelchair. The hotel also has a spa with lovely swimming pool which has steps down into it. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to use it. The bar area is mostly on one level however there is additional seating down some steps. The restaurant is just off the bar and has a decent menu and serves giant portions. I can recommend the fish and chips. There is plenty of parking available but only a couple of disabled parking spots. However the staff are more than happy to help you wit taking luggage to and from your car. The castle is seton it’s own grounds, there is even a giant map of Scotland that was built by Polish soldiers during WW2. Unfortunately I didn’t get chance to go round.
