Beck Isle Museum is a treasure trove exploring the history of life in the North Yorkshire market town of Pickering and surrounding district. Although our Grade II* Georgian building looks small from the outside, you will find a huge range of different indoor and outdoor display areas. Explore our period rooms, shops, stable and workshops reflecting rural life in the past.

Disabled Access at Beck Isle Museum

Access to the museum is through the second gate into the garden, up a sloping path and through the front door. The first door will be open, the second is manual, push open. The ground floor is wheelchair accessible but as it is a Georgian house, some of the corridors are a bit tight for a large wheelchair. Out through the back door (manual, push-open) and down the ramp you are in the yard which has level / ramped access throughout including into the smithy, wheelwright's workshop, stable and ironmonger's shop. The exhibition galleries above these workshops are accessible via a platform stairlift. Please ask at Reception if you think you will need a hand with operating the stairlift. The first floor of the main house is only accessed by stairs. We have a video tour of this floor available for people who cannot manage the stairs.

Accessible parking at Beck Isle Museum

Disabled visitors can park along the side of the Museum (turn off Bridge Street, down a steep slope onto an unadopted road). This area is tarmaced but there are no marked parking bays and therefore no dedicated disabled people's parking bays.

Toilets features at Beck Isle Museum

The accessible toilet is reached from the yard, next to the other public toilets. It has level access through a 900mm wide door. Inside there is plenty of turning space. The transfer space is to the left of the toilet (as you look at it). There is a grab rail on the far side of the toilet and a fold-down handrail. The small sink has an easy-turn cold water tap and a sensor-operated hot water tap. The baby-changing facility is also located in the accessible toilet cubicle.
