    About

A brute of a fortress. Caernarfon Castle’s pumped-up appearance is unashamedly muscle-bound and intimidating. Picking a fight with this massive structure would have been a daunting prospect. By throwing his weight around in stone, King Edward I created what is surely one of the most impressive of Wales’s castles. Worthy of World Heritage status no less. Most castles are happy with round towers, not Caernarfon! Polygonal towers were the order of the day, with the Eagle Tower being the most impressive of these. You will also note the colour-coded stones carefully arranged in bands. The site of this great castle wasn’t chosen by accident. It had previously been the location of a Norman motte and bailey castle and before that a Roman fort stood nearby. The lure of water and easy access to the sea made the banks of the River Seiont an ideal spot for Edward’s monster in masonry. Edward wasn’t one to miss an opportunity to tighten his grip even further on the native population. The birth of his son, the first English Prince of Wales, in the castle in 1284, was a perfect device to stamp his supremacy. In 1969, the investiture of the current Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Charles took place here.

    Great experience

Caernarfon Castle offers free entry to both disabled visitors and to their companions. As you would expect there are lots of steps and narrow spiral staircases. The venue has taken into consideration that a disabled visitor cannot access all areas hence it is free of charge to get in. It is however certainly worth a visit. Wheelchair users are able to enter the small museum, access all of the ground level area and a new glass lift enables you to reach the top of the Castle. Wheelchair users and those with limited mobility can reach the rooftop deck and enjoy the top of the King’s Gate tower. A great experience to be at the top of a castle. A first for the wheelchair users in our group! The views here are fantastic. There is also a cafe outside. Although a wheelchair user cannot enter the cafe due to steps (it’s very small in there anyway with only a few tables), there are grass mats outside the serving booth of the cafe where you can order (see photo). Plenty of tables and benches outside.

    Great access for a castle

Good wide ramp access to the main entrance. There is a lift to the upper floors, but unfortunately that part of the castle is closed at the moment. Ramped access throughout the grounds and in the museum (though you have to go in the exit!) Sadly steps into the cafe counter, no ramp, but seating outside. Good clean accessible toilets. Best of all, both disabled person and carer get free admission (it doesn't say that outside, but we were told no charge).

    Disabled Access at Caernarfon Castle

The main entrance to the castle is approached by a pedestrian ramp which leads to the ticket office. From here there is level access into the castle's inner courtyard. Level surfaces ramps and a chairlift allow access to the castle grounds. We regret that there is no wheelchair access to the medieval towers and wall walks. Please note that admission to Caernarfon Castle is free for disabled visitors and carer.
