Peaceful and pretty site but not as accessible as club sites usually are

Overview

We spent the week here in our motorhome. Fortunately on this occasion, we also brought the car, which made it easier getting around Cambridge and the surrounding area. Caravan and Motorhome Club sites are usually very good for accessibility but there were a few problems with this site, that would have made it very difficult if I'd been there without my hubby.

Transport & Parking

3

Limekiln Road, where the site is situated, is a national speed limit road but the site is on a blind bend just before a hill. This makes it difficult to see whether it is safe to pull in and out. The site has an unusual layout. Instead of the usual circular road with pitches off it, there are just lots of cul-de-sacs. There isn't much room to turn your unit around, which makes it tricky doing things like filling up with water and empyting waste.

Access

The site is quite hilly and some of them are quite steep. I was able to get up and down safely but the tent field, for example, is down a very steep hill that would have been unsafe for me to go up in my chair. Reception and the facilities block are on the level, and the motorhome service point is flat. There is a dog walk on the site but I couldn't access it, even in my mountain trike, as it was too narrow and on a sideways hill. There was a dog poo bin but it was down some steps, which meant I couldn't deal with my assistance dog myself. Most evenings, hubby walked her for me.

Toilets

1

There is an accessible toilet and shower room but it is difficult to get into. There is an outer door that leads into a lobby and the accessible room is off the lobby and has a RADAR lock. The outer door though, is heavy and opens inward. There is a lip, a little ramp and then another lip. I had to do a little wheelie to get in, whilst also opening the door and holding it open and letting my assistance dog through ahead of me. It was very difficult! The shower and toilet were clean. The layout wasn't great and I could have done with more space to get dried and dressed. The shower was hot enough but the water pressure was terrible and it wasn't really worth the effort it took to get in. I used the facility on the first morning but after that, I used the shower in our motorhome.

Staff

4

The staff were nice and friendly. They had reserved us a good pitch that was nice and level. I mentioned about the difficulty getting into the accessible facilities. They said management were onto it but didn't really know what the plan was. They didn't suggest anything to improve the situation though. E.g. they could have wedged the door open for an hour or two in the mornings, but they didn't seem fussed about solving the problem. They were more concerned that I wasn't blaming them (which I wasn't).

Pitches down one of the cul-de-sacs. No room to turn around. General service point with easy access drinking water and bins. Facilities block with level access to the walkway. Lip/ramp leading up to heavy door. Reception block with level entry. Dog poo bin down some steps made of stone flags.
