Overall Rating
Good
Right in the middle of the Toon and located inside Newcastle Railway Station, the Metro is a handy and accessible way to get into or out of the city. Ideal for day trips or catching a train North or South, it has step-free access to the platforms via lifts and accessible ticket gates. There is also level boarding, which makes things so much easier.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
There are accessible ticket gates in the ticket hall, with lifts providing step-free access to both Metro platforms. There are also escalators and stairs, with rails and tactile markings. The lifts have Braille and tactile markings near the buttons, along with audible floor announcements. There is enough space for a powerchair or scooter user. The platforms have fold-down bench seating, train information displayed on overhead dot matrix screens and announced over the speakers, along with an emergency help point. There is tactile paving along the platform edges.
Accessible facilities: Lift to all areas, Step-free entrance, Step-free access to most areas
Parking & Transport
Good
I travelled to this place by walk or wheel
There are several entrances to the Metro, but the main, step free route is via the Central Station concourse, making it perfect if you just stepped of the train. Local bus routes pass the the station.
Accessible Toilets
There are no accessible toilets in the Metro station, but the railway station has an accessible toilet and a Changing Places toilet, although the Changing Places toilet is very dated!
Staff
Excellent
Staff were quick to help me figure out the ticket purchasing system when I was initially confused.
