Overall Rating
Excellent
This was a really nice Changing Places toilet located on Level 6 in the Churchill Square Shopping Centre. It was located in the same area as the rest of the toilets and there was also a family room and baby-change room nearby. You need a RADAR key to access the toilet and the door opened outwards and wasn’t heavy. Inside was all the equipment you would expect, a ceiling hoist, a height-adjustable bench, a height-adjustable sink, a toilet, a privacy screen and even some additional chairs. The bench also had shower facilities next to it as well. The toilet was well-maintained and all the equipment was in good working order. The toilet felt nice and clean as well.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
The Changing Places toilet was on Level 6 of the shopping centre and was marked on the maps around the centre with the Changing Places symbol. There was a slight incline from the middle of the shopping centre up to the corridor leading to the toilets. The corridor was marked with symbols above it. The flooring throughout the shopping centre was very flat and smooth.
Accessible facilities: Step-free entrance
Parking & Transport
Excellent
I travelled to this place by walk or wheel
The shopping centre has it’s own dedicated parking options. There are two separate car parks, Red Car Park and Green Car Park. There are accessible parking spaces in both. There are some on every level of the Red Car Park and some on levels four and six of the Green Car Park. There are also parent and baby parking spaces. The shopping centre is roughly 750 metres away from Brighton Railway Station. The route has a bit of incline and some routes may have more incline than others. On one side of the shopping centre, where one of the main entrances are located, there are a number of bus stops available. These bus stops are located on Western Road. There are six stops in total, they are all called “Churchill Square” and are followed by different identifying numbers from C1 to C6. Between these six stops, these are the buses that are available: 1, 1X, 2, 5, 5A, 5B, 6, 17, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 29A, 29B, 46, 48, 49, 60, 71, 71A, 77, 270, 700, N1, N5, and N700.
Accessible facilities: Dedicated on-site parking
Accessible Toilets
The Changing Places toilet was clearly marked with a large Changing Places symbol on the door. It had a RADAR key lock on the left side of the door and the door opened outwards. There was no resistance in the door so it was very light and easy to open and close it. On the inside, there was a horizontal grab rail to assist with closing the door from the inside. To the left, as you entered, was the height-adjustable bench. This was folded away against the wall. It was a curved bench with little cushioning and had built-in drainage so you could use the shower facilities that were next to the bench. There was a drain in the wet room floor just beneath the bench. The remote was stored on the side and worked as you would expect. The bench had a safe working load of 200kg. Also on the left at the back of the room was the toilet. This was a standard toilet, not a Closomat toilet or one with bidet facilities. It had height-adjustable grab rails on either side of the toilet. There was space for a left-side transfer but it was too close to the wall for a right-side transfer. On the wall next to the toilet was a small colostomy shelf. In between the toilet and bench was the ceiling hoist. This had the remote hanging on the hoist arms and worked as expected. You would need to bring your own sling to use this hoist. The hoist had a safe working load of 205kg. There were some signs placed on the walls which gave instructions on how to use the hoist and bench safely. Opposite the door to the toilet was the height-adjustable sink. The remote to raise and lower the sink was placed on the wall on the right-hand side. It worked as expected. There was a single tap in the centre of the sink which twisted to control both the flow and temperature of the water. It had a long handle. There was a vertical grab rail on either side of the sink and a mirror above it. On the right, a manual soap dispenser was placed on the wall, and to the left was an automatic hand dryer. On the other wall, which was to the right of the sink, there was a paper towel dispenser. There were some coat hooks at different heights placed next to the door. A privacy screen was located in front of the toilet and was attached to the wall on one side. Two chairs, stacked on top of each other, had been placed next to the sink. A red emergency cord hung freely by the toilet. It was placed in a location that wouldn’t get in the way of using the ceiling hoist.
