Overall Rating
Good
This was a really nice shopping centre, it had lots of different types of shops available and a nice layout inside with seating available at regular intervals. There were maps located by the entrances which had easy to find symbols for accessible toilets and the Changing Places toilet. The Changing Places toilet was well-maintained with good working equipment. Quite a few of the shops had air conditioning which was really nice on the hot day I visited! One thing that was confusing on my visit was that it seemed they were replacing the lifts in the centre of the shopping mall. There was a lot of scaffolding where the lifts should have been and I was unable to find other lifts. Luckily, I was able to get to the places I needed, including the Changing Places toilet, without the lifts.
Disabled Access In and Around
Average
There are a few different entrances to the mall. They seemed to have similar formats with large text with the mall’s name above the entrance and then a number of doors beneath it. At one end of these rows of doors there was always one automatic door. Inside each main entrance there was a large sign with a map of the mall. Below the map were all the shops and vendors available. There were symbols to find key amenities like lifts, escalators, toilets, and the prayer room. I didn’t see any alternative map formats available. I also didn’t see any alternative formats being used throughout the whole mall. The flooring throughout the shopping centre was very flat and smooth. There was seating placed at regular intervals throughout the mall. Like I mentioned in the summary, it seemed that the main lifts in the centre of the mall were being replaced. Where they should have been was a lot of scaffolding and I was unable to find any other lifts. But I actually was able to do what I needed without using a lift.
Parking & Transport
Excellent
I travelled to this place by walk or wheel
The shopping centre has it’s own dedicated parking options. There are two separate car parks, Red Car Park and Green Car Park. There are accessible parking spaces in both. There are some on every level of the Red Car Park and some on levels four and six of the Green Car Park. There are also parent and baby parking spaces. The shopping centre is roughly 750 metres away from Brighton Railway Station. The route has a bit of incline and some routes may have more incline than others. On one side of the shopping centre, where one of the main entrances are located, there are a number of bus stops available. These bus stops are located on Western Road. There are six stops in total, they are all called “Churchill Square” and are followed by different identifying numbers from C1 to C6. Between these six stops, these are the buses that are available: 1, 1X, 2, 5, 5A, 5B, 6, 17, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 29A, 29B, 46, 48, 49, 60, 71, 71A, 77, 270, 700, N1, N5, and N700.
Accessible facilities: Dedicated on-site parking
Accessible Toilets
Excellent
The toilet area located on Upper Mall Level 6 was a long corridor with areas coming off with different areas, such as male and female toilets, a family area, an accessible toilet area (including the Changing Places toilet). Along the left side of this area, as you entered, there was a whole wall of bench seating that offered lots of plug sockets and was marked as a place to sit and recharge. This area could be used to recharge any devices. The Changing Places toilet was clearly marked with a large Changing Places symbol on the door. It had a RADAR key lock on the left side of the door and the door opened outwards. There was no resistance in the door so it was very light and easy to open and close it. On the inside, there was a horizontal grab rail to assist with closing the door from the inside. To the left, as you entered, was the height-adjustable bench. This was folded away against the wall. It was a curved bench with little cushioning and had built-in drainage so you could use the shower facilities that were next to the bench. There was a drain in the wet room floor just beneath the bench. The remote was stored on the side and worked as you would expect. The bench had a safe working load of 200kg. Also on the left at the back of the room was the toilet. This was a standard toilet, not a Closomat toilet or one with bidet facilities. It had height-adjustable grab rails on either side of the toilet. There was space for a left-side transfer but it was too close to the wall for a right-side transfer. On the wall next to the toilet was a small colostomy shelf. In between the toilet and bench was the ceiling hoist. This had the remote hanging on the hoist arms and worked as expected. You would need to bring your own sling to use this hoist. The hoist had a safe working load of 205kg. There were some signs placed on the walls which gave instructions on how to use the hoist and bench safely. Opposite the door to the toilet was the height-adjustable sink. The remote to raise and lower the sink was placed on the wall on the right-hand side. It worked as expected. There was a single tap in the centre of the sink which twisted to control both the flow and temperature of the water. It had a long handle. There was a vertical grab rail on either side of the sink and a mirror above it. On the right, a manual soap dispenser was placed on the wall, and to the left was an automatic hand dryer. On the other wall, which was to the right of the sink, there was a paper towel dispenser. There were some coat hooks at different heights placed next to the door. A privacy screen was located in front of the toilet and was attached to the wall on one side. Two chairs, stacked on top of each other, had been placed next to the sink. A red emergency cord hung freely by the toilet. It was placed in a location that wouldn’t interfere with the movement of the hoist. There were other, smaller accessible toilets available in the mall as well.
