Overview

This branch of Double Puc is a location I just happened to roll into when trying to start the day off right with a hearty breakfast and a coffee, and I'm glad I did! Great food, great drinks, great staff – and, barring some niggles about the accessible toilet, a great venue!

Transport & Parking

The nearest bus stop is on Avon Street, on the street behind the café. You'll find the 16 and 61 services in operation here. Five minutes' walk from the café, you'll find Bristol Temple Meads Station, which also has plenty of bus services and taxi spaces. There is on-street parking on Avon Street, as well as a long-stay car park at the train station, but I didn't notice any specific accessible parking spaces nearby. There's also a ferry route that stops across the water, but this is not wheelchair accessible. There are rails on either side of the stairs and a rain shelter with seats for those who can make the trip this way.

Access

I entered through a set of double doors, of which there are two. The right door to both entrances was pinned open. There was plenty of room for my manual wheelchair to fit through, though both doors will likely need to be opened for larger mobility devices. The café is on one level with step-free access throughout. Inside, there is a generous amount of space to manoeuvre, which I appreciate. There's nothing worse than trying to get through a row of seats and having to ask loads of people to move, apologising all the while for something that isn't your fault. There is a tall fridge next to the serving counter, and some of the stock is up high, but staff are on hand to help. There is no lowered counter but the card reader can be reached from a seated height. If needed, the staff will bring the card reader to you. There's a variety of hard and soft seats, different types of tables as well as high tables with stools. There are also seats outside if you fancy soaking up the warm weather. Throughout the venue, there are power sockets which can be used to charge a phone or mobility device if needed. One feature I noticed was the QR codes on the tables, which allow you to order food and drink to your table. I love this as it allows you to get settled, think about what you want and avoid queuing up. There's no signage of note but you can see everything within the venue easily. I'd have rated the venue higher if there were alternative formats in use. In short, loads of space and manageable for most mobility devices.

Toilets

This is the one section that brings the venue down a little, which is a shame. My main issue is that the lock for the toilet door is pretty high up, which makes it awkward to actually get in. I can reach, but for those who can't, asking a stranger for help to go to the toilet feels unnecessary. There is a lower lock on the inside, which you can secure by turning the lever, but the higher lock remains and you need to reach up and twist this to get back out. When you're in the toilet, the first thing you'll see is the toilet at the end of the room, which has a great toilet seat contrasting against the white bowl and silver rails on either side. The transfer space is clear, which is great – such a simple thing many venues overlook. The red cord hangs to the right when seated, but it is behind a narrow bin, which makes it hard to reach from the floor. The sink has a small basin and a lever-style tap, with contrasting rails on either side. The hand dryer is to the left of the sink. The door to the toilet opens outwards.
