    About

Durham Cathedral has been a place of welcome, worship and hospitality for almost a millennium, inspiring all who come. It is cherished for its magnificent Romanesque architecture and spectacular location at the heart of the Durham World Heritage Site. Despite being nearly 1,000 years old, the majority of Durham Cathedral is accessible to all visitors including Open Treasure, a new world-class exhibition route opening in spring 2016.

    Friendly and interesting

Visited the cathedral and Museum. We parked down the hill and I managed to slowly walk up, once up the grounds are all pretty level, somewhat uneven though. Staff all really friendly and we enjoyed our time wandering around and trying to find the harry potter spots. Museum was well worth visiting. Lifts available. You can park on the grounds and there is a bus up to the grounds so all nice and accessible.

Good access for a medieval building

You do need to get the bus up to the cathedral, but it takes wheelchairs. Level access into the cathedral and ramps at many of the places where there are steps - though not all are possible, they didn't have disabled pilgrims in mind in the middle ages! The stewards were all incredibly helpful on making sure I could get where I needed and pointing the best way. The lift down to the toilets/cafe/shop wasn't working in the day we went, but we were shown a way round. There is a suggested donation, but entirely voluntary.
