Welcome to Elgin Museum, Scotland's oldest continuously independent museum. The Museum’s collections are housed in a Category A listed building at the east end of Elgin High Street, Moray, in the North East of Scotland. Here you can see objects from all over the world, with a special focus on Moray, and from all periods of history and prehistory from before the dinosaurs to the present day. Disabled Access at Elgin Museum

For a full description, please see the Accessibility statement on our website: In summary, the Museum is wheelchair accessible, including downstairs where the majority of the permanent exhibits are displayed, events take place, and the visitor toilet is situated. Because of the building's age and listed status, we have been unable to install a lift. See https://elginmuseum.org.uk/exhibitions/ for information about the displays. The same information is available as QR codes beside the displays. If something upstairs is of particular interest to you, we do our best to bring it to you downstairs where feasible. In the Side Hall, the toilet is not wheelchair accessible, but when the Side Hall is in use, there is access to the main Museum. Parking is usually available at the east end of town including for Blue Badge users and drop off is possible at the door. We are a small enough organisation for an individual service from our volunteer staff who are trained to be receptive to the wishes of our visitors. Advance notice is welcomed for groups so we can do our best to make yours a worthwhile visit. There is internet access throughout the building. Please check public opening times on our web site and social media as they may change at short notice according to volunteer availability. Access by appointment, including for groups, can usually be arranged given sufficient warning.

Toilets features at Elgin Museum

There is one public and accessible WC in the Main Gallery. Doors to the WC are light, and opening is 870mm, 34.25″. Clear space for a wheelchair is on the right hand side when facing the WC: 870mm, 34.25″. Height of WC, floor to seat: 470mm, 18.5″ There are horizontal and vertical grab rails on either side of the WC. The fire alarm does not include a flashing light but gallery assistants are aware of the need to check such areas in the event of an emergency. There is no red alarm cord. Lighting is fluorescent. The floor is lino. The taps are handle style. Hot water from instant electrical heater. In the Side Hall, used for lectures and some family events, the WC is not wheelchair accessible, but for Museum events, there is access to the main Museum facilities.

A designated accessible toilet designed for wheelchair users and others with visible and non-visible accessibility requirements is available within the main public areas.
