The most complete medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland is still a working church with an active congregation. From its magnificent nave and choir to the atmospheric crypt of St Mungo, who was supposedly buried here in AD 614, Glasgow Cathedral is full of intriguing features. Look for the tomb of Bishop Wishart, a key supporter of Robert the Bruce, and carvings of 11 figures - perhaps the faithful disciples of Christ - on the stone pulpitum screen. Opening Times 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Mon to Sat, 9.30am to 5pm; Sun, 1pm to 5pm (last entry 4.15pm). The lower church closes at 4.15pm. 1 Oct to 31 Mar: Mon to Sat, 10am to 4pm; Sun, 1pm to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm). The lower church closes at 3.15pm. We recommend booking online in advance to guarantee entry. The cathedral may close for lunch from 12pm to 1pm. If you plan to visit at this time, please call ahead to check.

Really nice place

There was a different door to enter due to wheelchair access, there was a small lift operated by staff both to get into the building and to get to the back of the church. This made it awkward as they tried to be super helpful and give you space but you needed to get someone’s attention to get back down and get back out. I attempted the necropolis also, I’m a manual wheelchair user and had someone pushing. I braved the cobbles at the entrance but it was all steep hills as soon as you got in. Accessible for power chairs or scooters only.

Interesting visit

Access into cathedral was easy (at the opposite side to the main entrance), ask a member of staff to open the door then a member of staff operates the mobile lift however the lift inside the building which takes you to the upper part where services take place wasn't working so i couldn't access that. Also there is a downstairs area which is not accessible for wheelchairs. I have a powered wheelchair so we visited the Necroplis too. This would be hard work for someone in a normal wheelchair as it is situated on a hill but there are smooth pathways wide enough if you have a powered chair. There are lots of cobbles too which is not the most comfortable in a wheelchair but worth a visit.

Disabled Access at Glasgow Cathedral

Approach to site is over paving, lowered kerbs and cobbles. Monument The west door has a stair lift down into the nave and a call point. Please use this or call the stewards on 0141 552 6891 to have the door opened. The main entrance on the south side has four stone steps up into the nave. The nave is level with a smooth slabbed floor. The choir is up five stone steps or via the stair lift. The sacistry is up two steps and down eight. The crypt is down 25 steps with a single handrail. The Blackadder aisle is down 25 steps with handrails in places.
