Roller derby in Glasgow!

Overview

A fantastic day at the roller derby. Easy flat access to the big hall - cakes and crafts on sale, two games of roller derby. The staff of Glasgow Club Bellahouston were super helpful with accessibility questions. The roller derby community do their best to put on a fun day that is accessible as possible - well done Glasgow Roller Derby! If you don't know what roller derby is - go and see a game! You'll find events on Facebook. There is a lot going on around Scotland and the UK. It's a fast-paced, full contact sport, on roller skates - and there's no ball!

Transport & Parking

I got there by train and then bus - I don't use a wheelchair so can't comment on the First buses, but they looked accessible. It was a short walk from the main road (bus stopped just outside the venue). There is free parking onsite, and accessible places available. I've been to this venue before, it was really busy and they had staff out in high vis to direct cars in the car park.

Access

The main doors to the building are automatic and as soon as you enter there is the reception desk. to the right of this is a large cafe - plenty of well priced basic lunch options and the coffee is good, lots of tables. If you're using the gym, there are lifts available to take you to the upper level. You can enter the main hall for the roller derby from just outside the front door - a lot of friendly people to help and welcome you- it's all on one flat floor, no stairs.

Toilets

I did have to ask where the accessbile loo was and the reception team were happy to walk me over to it. On the ground floor the loos are in the swimming change area (I got permission to take photo attached just for this review). I didn't see the other toilets but I was told there were more accessible toilets upstairs by the gymnasium. Apparently there are three in total in the building. The accessible toilet on the ground floor was really large! It also had a shower, useful if you've been for a swim.

Staff

The staff were really helpful to show me the toilets and tell me about the facilities. There is a lot to do in Club Glasgow Bellahouston - I was there for the roller derby in the main hall, so I didn't get a full tour (although one was kindly offered!). I'd feel confident going back and getting a friendly reception.

Main entrance. Roller derby was to the left - cafe to the right. Automatic doors to get in the building. Large accessible toilet, throught the doors to pool on ground floor. This is door you have to go through to get to accessible toilet on ground floor. You might need a hand to open the door though. Sign showing way to the roller derby! Craft stalls. Tombola (next to the cake stall) - lots of fund raising going on to support the teams. Area for spectators. Chairs available but some brought their own from home. Selfie of me with the refs during a break. Roller derby in action! Glasgow Roller Derby vs Auld Reekie. The skaters with stars on their helmets are the jammers. They will try and get past the pack to score points. Fearless Fox from Glasgow Roller Derby jumping over skaters to get past and score points. Fearless Fox! Another view of accessible toilet on the ground floor.
