    Date of visit: October 2025

I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: dexterity or coordination and moving around.

    Excellent

We visited Amsterdam for a couple of days and stayed on a campsite in Zeeburg. I've never really used public transport but it seemed like the trams were the only realistic option to get into the city. I was really anxious about it but I needn't have worried! It was very easy. Almost all the trams have level entry. There are just a few stops where wheelchair access isn't possible. Boarding was simple and there are spaces for wheelchairs just inside each entrance. The attendant is in a booth at the entrance and they make people move if the wheelchair spaces are blocked.

    Disabled Access In and Around

You don't really need to move around much. I got on and then turned myself around and backed into the wheelchair space. It took us a while to work out the best place for my assistance dog to lie down but eventually I managed to get her to go between me and the wall. This worked well, as she isn't used to public transport and found the stopping and starting a bit tricky. The acceleration and deceleration are quite fast and is she wasn't in a good place, she slid around a bit.

I travelled to this place by tram

We used several trams over a 2-day period. We took tram 26 into the city and then other trams to get around. The platforms are raised up so that they are mostly level with the tram entry. The doors are automatic and nice and wide. There is space for a wheelchair just inside the entrance. We bought an I-Amsterdam card, which covers all GVB transport and most museums and attractions. If you are spending a day or more in Amsterdam, I would recommend this card. You can load it on your phone and then scan in and out of trams and other places.

    Accessible Toilets

There are no toilets on the trams but I wouldn't have expected there to be.

    Staff

The staff were excellent! We got on one tram that was really busy and many people were blocking the entrance area and wheelchair space. She politely asked them to move into the carriage. Initially, they didn't move, so she really told them off and they moved pretty quickly then. The staff also helped with scanning in and out, which had a bit of a knack to it.
