Overview

Found this wonderful place around 11 years ago and have been every year once or twice a year. I’ve run out of words to describe Hoe Grange (HG) holidays but I’ll try to sum it up. - HG does not feel like you are on holiday in cabins that are wheelchair accessible, which is a compliment, many places are very ‘disabled looking’. This feels like a more home from home. - HG use all natural cleaning products which is appreciated if you have allergies or sensitivities. - Ashbourne market town is 10 minutes drive. There are a selection of shops (a few chain shops but more independents), pubs, Sainsbury’s, a Co-Op and the highly recommended fish & chip shop. - Matlock 20 minutes drive. - There is a flat trail that is ‘walkable distance’ using the bomber or can be accessed via a short car journey. Trails drivable distance are wheelchair friendly. - A huge variety of places to go including National Trusts and English Heritage properties/gardens. We have been coming 11 years and we are yet to be bored! Recommended: Calke Abbey, Carsington Water. Crich Tramway Village, Cromford Mills, Great British Car Journey, Ilam Park, Kedleston Hall, National Museum of Childhood, Whitworth Park.

Transport & Parking

By car. There are parking spaces for 1-2 cars outside every cabin and a parking area if needed for a couple more cars. The cabin we were in had space outside for my WAV and a normal car.

Access

All cabins on one level. All cabins have ramped access or level access from the car parking to inside. All 3 wheelchair friendly cabins very easy to navigate. There is a 4th cabin suited to ambulant disabilities. 1 of the wheelchair friendly cabins has a hot tub with a hoist. ALL disabled equipment free of charge which isn’t common. A bomber powered buggy that can be operated two ways, great fun for accessing the hills and paths that are inaccessible for wheelchair users to get to. Specific to the Rainster cabin my family and I were in - there is plenty of space in the kitchen/living room/dining area which is one room. I’m in a Salsa Mini mid wheel powered wheelchair and I can fit under the dining table. The corridor leading to the bedrooms are wide enough for a powered wheelchair. The double bedroom can be used by people, most suited to manual wheelchairs or ambulant if they don’t require a profiling electric bed. There is a twin bedroom more suited for wheelchair users who require extra space, that has 2 profiling electric beds. It has enough room under the chest of drawers to fit under in a wheelchair. There is also a mirror that a wheelchair user can see themselves in, which isn’t always the case! Outside there is a secure patio with a table that I can fit under.

Toilets

One toilet which is more suited for ambulance people, you could get access in a narrow powered wheelchair or a manual wheelchair if you were fairly able and could stand up to transfer from your chair to the toilet. The bedroom more suitable for wheelchair users or ambulant people with standing aids has its own on suite wet room. This wet room has plenty of space, another accessible mirror, a toilet with rails and a padded toilet seat, a raise/lower sink, ample rails all over the room and there is a shower chair available. It is very helpful that there is a small trolley which I use to put my medication on.

Staff

We have known the owners David and Felicity since we have been coming here. They are always very welcoming, friendly and happy to help. They always go the extra mile. Their housekeeping staff are pleasant too. Nothing is ever too much for David and Felicity and we always look forward to seeing them.
