    About

IWM Duxford is Britain’s best-preserved Second World War airfield, with a fascinating history that dates back to the First World War. A former RAF fighter station, the site has a long and distinguished history from 1924 until its closure as an RAF Station in 1961 and is particularly famous for its role in the Battle of Britain in 1940. Today, IWM Duxford is Europe’s premier aviation museum with an unrivalled collection of aircraft, tanks and artillery, where historic buildings intersperse with state-of-the-art exhibition halls, including AirSpace and the American Air Museum (reopens end of March, 2016). IWM Duxford is also internationally renowned for its annual programme of world-class air shows. With one of the finest collections of tanks, military vehicles and artillery in the UK, mainly housed in the Land Warfare Hall we also show the impact of technological development on war and conflict.

    Pretty good but..

We arrived midday and sadly no disabled bays left. Considering the size it could do with a few more bays. Ended up parking a few hundred meters away. There is a drop off area but it's hard when you are the driver. A career ticket provided without asking for any proof which was nice. It's still very much step free and lots of automated doors. Enough seating. They have a bus to get you around and it has a chair lift. Although we didn't use mainly it seemed a bit infrequent and seemed to just drive between the main galleries but we didn't try really. They are moving bits around at the moment and one gallery is closed but still plenty to see. Only slight annoyance was the restaurant in the middle had run out of food but 2pm and we had to go to the other which had the same food the other had run out of. Not sure why they didn't just restock. It was a long walk and again the bus wasn't running. Lots and lots flying and had an enjoyable day but I overdid it and struggling today!

Air show & Imperial War Museum

We have visited the working airfield and imperial war museum many times because it is so accessible! Our most recent visit included an air show. the site is incredibly accessible - flat, ramped or with lifts. In our experience only one room ( operations room) was a bit trickier- but help was provided. Some of the displays are, by their nature, not accessible (can’t climb on board the Concorde) but the ramps and levels mean everything can be seen.

Excellent day out with superb access and facilities

This is a full day out with plenty of indoor and outdoor things to do and see. We spent the last day of our holiday here and will almost certainly come back again, probably for one of their flying days.
