Overview

My wife has been a wheelchair user for 16 years and we visited Kelham Island for their special open day. We were able to easily visit all of the exhibits and attractions and there has been dramatic improvement for wheelchair users since our first visit about 4 years ago. I was particularly impressed with the smooth wheelchair walkway which had been created to overcome the cobbled access areas.. Toilet facilities were fine and automatic doors were available. A great deal of thought and work has gone into making this museum accessible for all.

Transport & Parking

5

We received a friendly welcome and were directed to one of four large disabled parking bays with lots of room to enable easy transfer from car to wheelchair. From there we found very smooth, wheelchair friendly walkways leading to the museum entrance

Access

4.5

Access into the museum was excellent through automated large doors and we were able to visit all areas of the museum. Lifts were available to gain access to upper floors. Only one set of doors in the museum proved slightly difficult.

Toilets

4.5

good toilet facilities for easy wheelchair access

Staff

All staff were extremely friendly and helpful . A girl telling stories for young children (with puppets) was great.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I would certainly recommend Kelham Island Museum for a most interesting day visit. Anyone with disabilities need have no worries about coming here as it is extremely accessible and easy to get around.
