La Locanda

If we were going purely on food, this would be a 5-star review. It's a popular place (a seat is never left empty) and for good reason; the best pasta I’ve ever had, paired with excellent wine. I phoned ahead to check access and gluten-free options (essential for both myself and my companion). They told me they had a small step but their regulars who were wheelchair users made it over fine, but that the toilet wasn’t accessible due to a step. That was fine by me, I just wanted to be prepared. When we arrived, the front step was just slightly too high for my powerchair and because it’s on Cockburn Street, which is on a slope, one side of the step is higher than the other. It made for a very awkward entrance with a full restaurant looking on. Two staff members tried to help and ended up grabbing the specials board and using it as a makeshift ramp. Obviously not ideal, but I applauded their creativity and determination.

This is my new favourite place! The staff go above and beyond to help. This was third visit, I had previously gone in my manual wheelchair but this time went in my powerchair and was happy I still managed in. The waitress noticed me outside and remembered that I had gluten free soup before and told me what they had that might suit me today. They then moved tables about so I could get in ok, they didn't make a fuss and made me feel right at home. There is a small step on a slant but it hasn't been a problem. The food is amazing! Everything I've had in there tastes fantastic and they have freshly baked gluten free bread. The reason I didnt put 5 stars is because they bathroom isn't wheelchair accessible; I can make it as I can walk a little but its up a step, along a short slim corridor and its too small to fit a wheelchair. The staff are so friendly though and do everything they can to help :)
