National Library of Scotland

As a big book and library fan, I had to visit the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh when I found myself in the area. It’s a huge building and it’s said to have over 24 million items in its collection in various formats. The archives themselves aren’t open to the public but there are regular exhibits on, a café, a gift shop and a reading room where you can sit and work. There are two platform lifts that were available to bring me from the entrance to the level above where all this was located. The staff helped with the lift and then also directed me to the exhibits and even showed me some of the items in the archives via pictures on an iPad. The exhibits I saw when I visited were called Treasures and Paperback Revolutions and I found them both really interesting. It was a really lovely space and I would visit again.

The accessible toilet was clean and well lit, with clear signage from inside the venue. The route includes lift access, with signs for wheelchair lift access visible near the stairs. The toilet room is quite narrow, and the bins are positioned close to the toilet, restricting the transfer space.

Good toilet, although the floor was wet. Hand dryer opposite the sink rather than next to it. Very spacious.
