National Museum of Iceland

General information The National Museum of Iceland was established in 1863 and is the oldest Museum in Iceland. The Museum is within walking distance from the centre of Reykjavik and number of city buses stop close to the Museum. Exhibitions The permanent exhibition is intended to provide insight into the history of the Icelandic nation from the Settlement to the present day. The exhibition includes about 2,000 objects, dating from the settlement age to the present day, as well as about 1,000 photographs from the 20th century. Various temporary exhibitions are on display which are diverse and intended to appeal to different groups. Visitors from around the world can now enjoy our museum's permanent exhibition with ease thanks to our audio guides, which are available in 10 languages. Simply access the guides through your smartphone in Icelandic, English, Spanish, Swedish, Danish, French, Polish, German, Italian, and Chinese. In addition to our regular audio guides, we are proud to offer a special audio guide called the Rainbow thread. Developed in collaboration with Samtökin '78, The National Queer Organization of Iceland, this unique guide provides insight into queer history in Iceland, offering a more inclusive perspective on the nation's heritage and history.
