National Museum of Ireland Review

2.5

Visit date:

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Hearing Aid

Overview

The National Museum of Ireland in Dublin is highly accessible to all. We had a great day out. There were lot's of interesting exhibits and I found the staff extremely helpful and friendly. There were some accessibility issues. I attended with my cousin who has a hearing impairment and she found it enjoyable to use the touchable exhibits but due to lack of induction loops and background noise she found it difficult to fully enjoy the day.

Transport & Parking

3.5

There is no parking on museum grounds due to it being a historical site. However there is public parking within walking distance of the museum and if offers good value if booked online before hand. There is also blue badge public parking available down the street on Merrion square west.

Access

2.5

There is a ramp leading to the main entrance and double doors. The ground floor exhibits, gift shop, and one toilet are wheelchair accessible. There are no lifts to the first floor making it not accessible to wheelchair users. Also there are no induction loops for people with hearing impairments. There is no seating or wheelchairs provided however mobile stools are available on request.

Toilets

2

There is one wheelchair accessible toilet on the first floor it is easy to find and appropriately equipped and is also very clean and spacious.

Staff

5

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The were apologetic about the lack of facilities and spoke about how there was work being done at the museum at the moment was being done to improve facilities for people with disabilities

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I feel that there are a lot of improvements that could be made and are being made. For a free day out in Dublin I felt it was good. The staff were very good. Also the second and third floors will be opening again. Unfortunately I could not recommend it to people with mobility impairments as it is not very accessible. Guide and Assistance Dogs are welcome. The lighting in some exhibitions is low to address conservation concerns around certain artefacts. There are touchable exhibits within the Museum which the staff helped us to access
