    About

A Palladian mansion and world-famous landscape garden. When Stourhead first opened in the 1740s, a magazine described it as ‘a living work of art’. The world-famous landscape garden has at its centrepiece a magnificent lake reflecting classical temples, mystical grottoes, and rare and exotic trees, and offers a day of fresh air and discovery. Uncover the fascinating history of Stourhead house with an Italian ‘Grand Tour’ adventure and enjoy the unique Regency library, Chippendale furniture and inspirational paintings. The Palladian mansion is set amid ‘picnic perfect’ lawns and extensive parkland. Explore the 1,072 hectare (2,650 acre) Stourhead estate where chalk downs, ancient woods and farmland are managed for wildlife.

Powered tramper all terrain buggies available for small donation

Accessible toilets both near main car park and in the stable yard next to the spread eagle inn. Three wheeled easy to drive powered all terrain buggies available to loan so long as you pass easy driving test. Very low key just making sure you are safe in the vehicle and if you can manage an Electric wheelchair youll Be fine!!!! Left and right hand handlebar control available so good for stroke survivors like me who have a weak side and this very much means that Stourhead and national trust in general complies with the equality act.

Lovely place but difficult for manual wheelchair users and their pushers

On advice from my son we hired a mobility scooter and took that to Stourhead. Unless you have a team of fit wheelchair pushers you’ll struggle with the steep paths - especially as the entrance/exit is at the top of a steep slope after you’ve used your energy going round the beautiful lake and exploring its buildings. We didn’t try to go to the house, but were disappointed that there are steps that precluded us getting access to the walled garden.
