Overview

A really lovely zoo, with great staff who clearly love their jobs, the animals and the visitors. Staff doing the animal talks are really good at interacting and keep things interesting and fun as well as being informative. We enjoyed a lovely day and had a great lunch in the café. Four of us all ordered different meals and they all arrived together, hot and delicious. It was so good that we went back for a cream tea in the afternoon! The new Changing Places toilet was clean and well designed. This facility is what enabled us to stay for the whole day as one member of our group needs a ceiling hoist in order to access the toilet. The Fishing Cat area has recently been made accessible for wheelchair users and we had a great time spotting it. We are looking forward to returning soon and purchased annual passes.

Transport & Parking

4.5

There is a car park just outside the zoo with level access parking spaces for Blue Badge holders. More Blue Badge parking would be useful though as the current spaces are quickly used on busier days.

Access

4.5

We found it easy to get around with my son's powered wheelchair. There is an area near the otter pond which has gravel and a difficult bridge, but the team at the zoo are planning to change these very soon to improve accessibility.

Toilets

5

The zoo has a brilliant full sized Changing Places toilet with a ceiling hoist and adult sized changing table. The facility was clean and is checked frequently. There are plenty of hooks for hanging bags and coats, with some at an ideal height for wheelchair users and others higher up.

Staff

Staff at Newquay Zoo are truly lovely. They are always keen to talk to people and the interact superbly with my son, even though he may not always respond to them. The management are keen to discuss further ways to improve and they have lots of things happening already. Everyone is really friendly and the staff all seem to enjoy their work.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The team at Newquay Zoo have worked hard to improve their toilet facilities and they are really proud of the new Changing Places toilet facility. They are also very keen to know what else can be improved for people, and that is an attitude which other organisations could learn from.

Photos

Inside the Changing Places toilet, with Alfie the Elf demonstrating how the ceiling hoist enables him to use the toilet. Grandma and grandson enjoying a stroll together. The access improvements to the Fishing Cat area enabled us to find one of the elusive creatures! Had to include a Meerkat! They were fascinating to watch.
