    Pontoon Dock DLR Station

    4

    Date of visit: October 2026

I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: accessing toilets and moving around.

I use or have experience of: disabled toilet, wheelchair

A view of the entrance to the Pontoon Dock DLR station. The tracks for the trains are above ground and the bridge supporting them can be seen overhead on the right of the image. There is a tall silver building to the left of the tracks with a DLR logo at the top and a teal sign with white lettering with the name of the station on itA view of the platforms at the station. The picture has been taken from one platform and you can see the tactile markings at the edge of the platform before the platform ends. A new DLR train is stopped on the platform opposite and the white and teal train can be seen stopped. There are canopies over both platformsOne of the lifts to travel between street level and platform level. The lift is silver and has doors that open in the centre. The door on the left has a narrow window. A button panel is on the right of the lift doors Inside one of the lifts. There are yellow grab rails on each side of the lift and the wall are a matte, metal panelling, there is no mirror on the back wall. The help point on the platform which is a tall white structure. It has hazard markings down the side to make it easy to spot. On the left are two red panels and the lower one is a door which opens to an emergency train stop control and the top provides instructions on when and how to use it. On the right there is a green panel which has a large button which can connect you to staff. There is also a painted area on the platform at the base of the help point to make it easy to spot. Some of the seats available on the platforms. They are placed at the back of each platform, the furthest away from the platform edge. There are four seats in a bench and they are metal seats with backrests. There are yellow armrests between each seat and on either end

    Good

This station is next to the Thames Barrier Park and is a level above street level. There are lifts and staircases to get from street level to the platforms. The platforms have canopies over them so they are mostly covered, but the platform is still in the open so it is not temperature controlled. There are tactile markings at the edge of the platform and there are help points to call for assistance or notify of any emergencies. The DLR trains stop level with the platform with a very minimal gap between the train and the platform. I travelled to and from this station on one of the brand new DLR trains which are white and teal instead of the previous red trains. They have a much better layout inside the carriage for wheelchair users and the buttons to open the doors are at a better height.

The entrance to this station is clearly signposted with multiple DLR logos and the station name is displayed in large letting on the side of a tall structure where the lifts and staircases are located. There is a lift for each platform and also stairs with grab rails. The platforms have tactile markings and a painted yellow line at the edge of the platform to indicate where it is. There is seating available along each platform which have backrests and armrests between each seat and at either end. The armrests are painted yellow. The platforms have canopies covering them entirely although they do not cover the tracks, so there may be some spots as you transfer between train and platform that are not protected from bad weather. The station is also still based outside so the platforms do not have any heating or cooling facilities There are help points in the station which provide access to alert of any emergencies or speak to staff. The help points are tall white stands with ‘Emergency point’ posted at the top. On the left are some red panels which include a red door which has an emergency train stop control inside. On the right there is a red panel on top which has a fire alarm and below it is a green panel with a large circular button and this connects you to a member of staff. The trains stop level with the platforms and there is only a small gap between the train and the platform at this station. The brand-new DLR trains (as of October 2026) have a much better layout inside the carriage for those in wheelchairs or with prams. The buttons to open the doors are also lower down on the newer trains and therefore easier to reach for someone at a lower level.

Accessible facilities: Lift to all areas, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals, Step-free access to most areas

I travelled to this place by train

This stop has two platforms, one where southbound services to Woolwich Arsenal stop, and the other where northbound services to Bank and Stratford International. I didn’t see any parking facilities nearby.

    Staff

The station itself is unmanned but there is always a member of staff on each DLR train. The help points on the platform also provide a way of communicating with staff.
