Overview

We went into the lovely Dorset town of Sherborne to have a look around and go to the Abbey. Free entry, a large part was wheelchair accessible. Detailed laminated cards gave information about the history and architecture of the abbey. There were also free pamphlets in a range of foreign languages, and at least one activity sheet for children (I only noticed this one because we have no children, but I was a maths teacher and this one was based on numbers and maths). The fan-vaulted ceiling was spectacular, with a myriad of carved and coloured medieval bosses - a helpfully placed mirror lets you see its full glory without having to crane your neck. There are parts of the Abbey that date back to the eighth century, with pieces added in most centuries since. Two Saxon kings are buried there. Tiled and stone floor that was very smooth to run over in the wheelchair. On the approach to the entrance there is a small run of cobbles, but then smooth tarmac, and a slight rise to the church.
