    St Paul’s is an architectural masterpiece and its dome a landmark of the London skyline. It is a symbol of the hope, strength and resilience of the city and nation it serves. A cathedral has stood here since 604AD with the present cathedral now over 300 years old. Sightseers can discover the beautiful décor of the vast cathedral floor before climbing to the Golden Gallery atop the dome with its breathtaking panoramic views across London. The Crypt is the resting place for famous Britons such as Lord Admiral Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and the Cathedral’s architect – Sir Christopher Wren. Sightseers can explore using multimedia guides available in nine languages plus BSL and family tour formats; or they may choose to join guided tours and talks; all included with admission. St Paul’s is also a busy working church with services held daily and concerts and talks throughout the year at which all are welcome.

    Impressive Access and Soon to be even better - Visit on Disabled Access Day

    This review is specifically about my visit to St Paul's Cathedral on Disabled Access Day 2019. Historic building dating from 1710, with excellent access.

    Impressive accessibility and exceptional staff

    This review is specifically about a special event I attended at St Paul's Cathedral. In December I attended a performance of Messiah written by George Frederic Handel. St Paul's Cathedral, with its iconic dome, is one of the most famous buildings in the world. It's been the venue for many special occassions, including Prince Charles and Diana's marriage. It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and was completed in 1710. For a historic building it has excellent access.

    Tranquility in the centre of London

    The wheelchair access was via a side door and there is a bell to press to alert someone to open the door. We were taken behind the scenes along a small corridor to a good sized lift easy to turnaround in. This amazed me as a building so historic was able to have an excellent lift installed. The staff then take you to join the rest of the public.

    Disabled Access Information Provided by St Paul's Cathedral

    Disabled Access at St Paul's Cathedral

    The main entrance is accessed by 24 steps. A handrail is available to both sides of the steps. The north churchyard entrance is step-free. Once inside the Cathedral, there is a modern lift serving the crypt and cathedral floor. Usable lift space - 140cm length x 130cm width. Wheelchairs are available on request. Access is flat or ramped within all parts of the cathedral floor and crypt. The quire and sacrarium have a small user-operated chairlift. Assistance is available if required. Access to the dome galleries is unavoidably via stairs only. A video fly through of these levels is available on the multimedia guide.

    Toilets features at St Paul's Cathedral

    The accessible toilets are found in the crypt level. There are separate male and female toilets and keys are not required to access them. They are reached via level access. The doors open outwards. The width of the door is 88cm and it is locked by a twist lock. There is a lever type mixer tap in the sink. The toilet dimensions are 120cm x 168cm.
