Disabled Traveller visits the historical Almonry museum at Evesham
A very interesting museum, full of items used many years ago, lots of memories for those seniors, and helps younger people to see how we lived years ago.
It’s “free” entrance applied during 2025, but it will be closed from September 25 for work to be carried out throughout the museum, as at the moment, there are steps everywhere, and the building will be installing a small lift to enable disabled to get down to the main lower floor.

(Photo 2 ) The 14th century building, built around 1390, was the home of the Benedictine Monks, that had been founded in the 8th century. The Abbey had a building known as as The Almonry, which was situated in an area of the monestry, and it was the home of the monk in charge of the house, so that he could fulfill his duties.
(Photo 3 ). The monk had the responsibility of looking after the poor, and would take charge of handing out the Alms ( that’s money, food, or anything else that would help the poor). They also took care of the sick, and any needs of Pilgrims that visited.
When King Henry V111 closed the Abbey, the estate became the home of the crown.
All that remains today is the Almonry, the two churches, a bell tower and an arch.
(Photo 4 ). A narrow stone path leads across the grass to the entrance, which is a level entry.
(Photos 5 and 6). Inside is the reception desk where you will be warmly welcomed by a friendly staff member, and a plan of the exhibition may be suggested to you.
Entry, in 2025, is quite free, although after your enjoyable visit, you may feel you would like to offer a donation in support of the house, and you may offer cash or pay by card.
(Photo 7 ). You may now tour the many rooms, but you do have to go down steps to the lower level. If you cannot cope with steps, then speak with reception staff, and they will take you around to the rear and help you enter the lower floor level.
We left our wheelchair by reception desk, and just about coped with the steps on the lower level only.
Photos 8 to 17 ). The exhibitions small rooms are full of ancient and more recent historical artifacts, with lots of happy memories of days gone by, and a good half hour to an hour
can be spent here.
(Photos 18 and 19 ) the family room is enteresting, showing how our kitchens would have been like, and tucked away at the rear of our homes.

Bear in mind that Eveshams attractions of shopping are all along High Street, and you will comfortably see all that’s needed within the Three hours that the carpark allows, including a lunch break.
