Overview
The Athenian is a modern Greek street food chain that’s popped up in quite a few cities across the UK. Starting life as a London market stall, they now have branches in places like Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester. I was staying in the nearby Ibis and found myself craving a gyro, so I thought I'd check it out.
Transport & Parking
There are on-street parking spaces available on Newhall Street, including a handful of accessible bays. The nearest bus stop is also on Newhall Street, where the 101 service operates. Snow Hill station is less than half a mile away, but I wouldn't recommend the walk. In my opinion, the food isn’t worth the trek.
Access
This location is at the top of a flight of stairs, but there is level access if you go around to the right. The doors were pinned open when I arrived, which was helpful as there was no need to wrestle with a heavy door. However, there was not much space between the open door and the top of the stairs, which made me a little nervous. Inside, the small shop area has enough space for a powerchair and a few other people. You can order at the counter straight ahead, which does not have a lowered counter, or use the touchscreen on the right. I was able to reach the screen from my wheelchair and could tap my card on the reader at the side without any trouble. Seating is very limited, as it is mostly a takeaway, with just three high stools and a narrow shelf to rest your food on. There were no alternative formats available, and no hearing loop. The nearby traffic lights have tactile paving on either side
Toilets
There are no toilets at this venue.
Staff
The staff were helpful, though there was nothing particularly notable about the interaction.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
I ordered the large gyro box, and I was still hungry after. The portion didn't feel especially large.
