Toons is one of those places where the main café experience works really well from a powerchair. The excellent parking, automatic entrance, huge amount of manoeuvring space and accessible tables meant I could visit independently without feeling like an inconvenience. If the accessible toilet were improved — particularly by adding an emergency assistance cord — this would be an excellent accessible café.

♿ Toons Café – Powerchair Accessibility Review I visited the café inside Toons Home Furnishers with my powerchair, Rosie, and overall I found it really easy to access and navigate independently. 🚗 Parking & entrance: Accessible parking is available incredibly close to the entrance — I was able to park around one metre away. The route into the building is level and step-free, and there are wide automatic double entrance doors, making it very easy to get inside independently. 🛞 Getting around: The route through the store to the café is excellent for a powerchair. The aisles are particularly wide, the flooring is smooth and there were no awkward obstacles or tight turns. ☕ Inside the café: The café itself is very spacious. There was plenty of room between the tables and, even though it was quite busy, I could manoeuvre Rosie comfortably. I could sit properly at the table without sticking out into an aisle and other customers could still pass easily. Most importantly, I never felt as though I was “in the way.” The café is also air-conditioned, which was a big plus for comfort. The service counter is quite high and doesn’t appear to have a lowered wheelchair section, but staff were happy to bring food and drinks to the table. 🌿 Outdoor seating: There’s an outdoor seating area accessible from the main café. It has a ramped, step-free route onto a flat surface, making it suitable for a powerchair. However, the doors leading outside aren’t automatic, so some wheelchair users may need assistance opening them. 🚻 Accessible toilet: This was unfortunately the weakest part of the visit. There is a step-free accessible toilet with some grab rails, including a fold-down rail, but the room is fairly narrow and doesn’t provide particularly generous wheelchair manoeuvring space. Baby-changing/bin equipment also takes up some of the available space. Most importantly, there is no emergency assistance pull cord at all. This is a significant omission for anyone who may need assistance after transferring or falling, particularly if visiting independently. ☕ Food & service: I had an iced pumpkin spice latte, which was good, and Mum had a scone with jam and cream, which she said was delicious.
