Overview

The museum tells the fascinating story of Edinburgh's working class from the 18th to the late 20th centuries. The museum displays objects and tableaux. It covers the domestic, working and recreational history. The ground and first floors only have step free access. We really enjoyed our visit.

Transport & Parking

There are buses that stop very close by. Sorry I was taken there by my cousin who lives in Edinburgh, so I did not have to plan the route.

Access

4

The entrance has step free access via a permanent ramp and the door was open. The museum is over 4 floors. The ground and first floor have step free access via a lift. The second and third floors are only accessible by stairs. All stairs have handrails. However, the third floor which is where the video room is, was closed when we visit. I was not aware of a guide for people unable to access the upper floors, to see what is on floors they are unable to access. Introducing a guide book for the second floor for disabled customers would be helpful and inclusive. There is some seating with back support.

Toilets

I did not use the accessible toilet during our visit, but there is one on the ground floor.

Staff

Had minimal contact with the staff. There was someone at the entrance desk who said hello and good bye.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

We loved our visit. It was fascinating to see working class history and culture being represented in a museum. We particularly enjoyed the tableau of the kitchen, as it looked like my grandmother's kitchen. Representations like this are usually missing in most museums/ exhibitions, so it was so refreshing to see something we could relate to. It really is a fabulous museum. It is disappointing that only two floors are step free. It would be wonderful if the museum could produce a guide with photos so disabled people unable to visit the second floor could see what is there. I loved it and would definitely return.
