Overview

Having visited this location before, but not having reviewed it prompted me to return as the food was fantastic, with a traditional menu and good staff experience. It was an old established tavern, though the furniture and the decor was clearly old and tired, it didn’t affect the atmosphere or it’s busy nature.

Transport & Parking

4.5

We used a taxi to travel from our Hotel that was centrally based, the Union was on the corner of two busy streets, but there were bus stops on either side of the roads with 4 services available all into the City centre. They were no more than 50m from the entrance.

Access

3.5

The entrance is one step down with 2 very stiff front doors, which when the staff saw us they opened for us and on leaving, in the bar area there was ample space between tables, to the dining area there were 2 steps down. We were asked if we required assistance. The menus ranged from traditional pub food with veg and vegan alternatives and gluten free options as well as very Thai slant on things. We weren’t offered and didn’t notice any braille or large print menus.

Toilets

3.5

Small, again old and tired and just met the required disability arrangements, no red cord - if there was a large wheel chair would have been more cramped. It had grab rails was clean but needed refurbishment.

Staff

4.5

From the booking of the reservation on line, to speaking with the Manager on the phone who remember us from our last visit and the occasion - first class. Very attentive and recognised that we may additional accessibility needs. Waiting and bar staff, equally good.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

All the staff continues to wear masks, although that restriction remained down to personal choice. The manager was aware of the need to refurb, refresh and reappoint the Tavern, for us we would go back for the food and the service alone.
