The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is a vibrant, family-friendly visitor centre located in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere. This unique indoor museum brings all twenty three enchanting tales to life through immersive three dimensional scenes, interactive touchscreens, and a magical recreation of the Lake District countryside. Visitors can explore Peter Rabbit’s Garden, visit Mrs Tiggy-Winkle’s Kitchen, and discover the fascinating history of the author herself.

The venue provides a detailed accessibility guide and offers step-free access to all areas of the attraction via a lift, including the Peter Rabbit Café and gift shop. A unisex accessible toilet is available on the lower floor, equipped with an emergency pull cord and grab rails. While the building is situated on a steep hill, there is a ramped entrance from the courtyard, and accessible parking can be found fifty metres away at the Rayrigg Road car park.

Disabled entry was a let down

We attended in June 2024 and the attraction was lovely and they do free carers tickets, however accessibility leaves something to be desired. The “accessible entrance” is up a very steep hill with a cars parked on it leaving only a narrow path. I had to push my partner who is in a self propelled wheelchair and then hold onto it on the way back down due to the steepness of the hill and the fact it opens up directly onto a main road! Inside, the attraction is accessible apart from the garden which can only be accessed by steps. Inside the attraction is narrow and not suitable for mobility scooters.

Afternoon visit to Beatrix potter

We spent a lovely afternoon here. More about access later in review. Staff at reception were helpful and explained I would only be able to see the garden from the top as it’s steps to access this. Getting around inside was ok but would have struggled if I had my scooter as it’s quite narrow . It was fine with my wheelchair. Many scenes from the books are on display in the form of stuffed animals . Which I have to say are very well made. The scenes are amazing . There is also a garden which I could see from the upper level this too was very interesting. There is also an exhibit about Beatrix potter and her life. Everything apart from the garden was accessible some areas had a slight slope, there were information boards telling you about the scenes. The centre also has a cafe and shop. The shop was fully accessible. We didn’t visit the cafe . They also do afternoon tea pre booked with characters from the books as well as parties . We spent longer than expected visiting the exhibits.
