Overview

I was excited to visit Trafalgar Square, as I'd only ever seen it on a Monopoly board until this year, and I wasn't disappointed. I arrived via the path in front of the National Galleries. Straight ahead were several busking zones, large white circles where performers set up. I noted a man writing spontaneous poetry on a typewriter, for which you could pay what you thought it was worth, and a girl with a keyboard singing Dreams by the Cranberries – a band I've only started to appreciate recently. The fountains sparkled in the midday sun, and the sky was as clear as I could hope for. If you're in London, you need to visit.

Transport & Parking

3

There are plenty of bus routes in the area. The Trafalgar Square bus stop serves the 24, 29, 176, N5, N20, N29, N41 and N270 services – all of which are accessible. Charing Cross Underground is just 320 metres away, so it's a handy rail option if that's your thing. You might get lucky with some local parking, but I wouldn’t chance it in such a tourist hotspot.

Access

4

There’s level access to the square, which is served by several bus routes. Outside the National Galleries, there are large lifts that take you down to the square and the toilets. I had a bit of trouble with the heavy lift door, and although it has braille buttons, you have to hold the button down for the entire journey, which could be tricky for some. In front of Nelson’s Column, there’s a braille information board, which I thought was a really nice touch. While lots of people were sitting on the edge of the fountains, there are also plenty of benches dotted around the square.

Toilets

The toilets are in front of the National Galleries, though I wasn't able to visit them during my trip. The National Galleries has accessible toilets and a "partial" Changing Places toilet.
