Overview

We went as spectators to watch the Weston half marathon. We loved it. We had a great time cheering people on as they came along the seafront. We then went on to the pier (using my residents card) to watch them crossing the finish line. We even went up onto the balcony to watch the award’s presentation. It was all fully accessible for spectators. Unfortunately for participants it wasn’t as accessible. Part of the race Circuit was on the beach meaning no wheelchair users or people with walking aids were able to enter.

Transport & Parking

As it was a half marathon a lot of the roads were closed which reduced parking. There appeared to be no access to the sovereign centre car park and the beach parking and beach road was closed. It made finding disabled parking tricky but we found a space on a back road. There are loads of busses that go in to town though so that would have maybe been better.

Access

10/10 for spectators… but I don’t think there were any wheelchair or walking aid entries as the course included a section on the beach.

Toilets

There were some port-a-loos provided but also the seafront has toilets and a changing places loo too, and the pier has toilets.

We were able to go on to the pier free of charge as I have a residents pier pass. However not everyone that attended was local. This meant people had to pay £1 each to get to the finish line to cheer on their friends and family. A lot didn’t as they were large groups and it would have been expensive, and this meant it was pretty quiet at the finish line. A lot of people were supporting with dogs and this stopped them accessing the finishing line on the pier as the pier only allows assistance dogs.
