Welcome to the July review roundup! We have another exciting selection of reviews to share with you this month - we are focusing on accessible places to stay where our community has enjoyed a break away or a holiday with family.
We also would like to mark Changing Places Awareness Day on 19 July by highlighting fantastic reviews of Changing Places toilets around the UK.
While we’re here, we also have some exciting developments to share about our expanding volunteer programme… keep scrolling!
Places to discover
HPH recommends trying the gondola in the Nevis Range Mountain Resort as somewhere to visit whilst on holiday. The review does highlight that this experience is more suited to people who are ambulant disabled as in some areas there is limited space to move.
When you are climbing in and out of the gondola the staff are happy to hold it still to give you more time to transfer into your seat. There is also a handmade ramp for the use of people with scooters and wheelchairs should they need it.
Wheelchairs are available to borrow at the top of the mountain to help with your visit to the visitor centre and cafe.
Frizzygirl went to check out accessibility at Shrewsbury Market Hall. The building is a small and older style cinema, there are two wheelchair spaces available at the front of the cinema which can be booked up to 24 hours in advance of a screening, wheelchair users who are attending where the companion get 50% off their cinema tickets each. Being an older building there are some challenges with some tight corners to negotiate and the toilet is accessible with help as you will need to move some things out of the way.
There are some challenges around wheelchair accessibility and accessible toilets - there are not really any accessible toilets within the market, and the ones that are available would be difficult to access with a carer’s support.
C27pritchard visited the beach café in Fraserborough and was pleasantly surprised at the accessibility of the cafe. The café is nicely laid out for navigating in a wheelchair - well spaced out tables make it easier to move around.
There is a small lip at the entrance and the toilet would be a bit tight for anyone in a larger wheelchair, but the review has some really helpful photos.
Travels at home and away from home
Chrisclark7401 shared his experience of travelling by Stena Line ferry from Liverpool to Belfast and back during the day. Booking the trip included filling in a form to ask for assistance to park near the lifts, and there is an option to ask for wheelchair assistance.
Both cabins on the trip to, and from Belfast were well equipped with plenty of space to move around. The bathroom on the outward journey to Belfast had a step up into the shower, but on the way back it was level access.
Shail submitted a review of Ô Chambres d'Hôtes, a holiday apartment between Callais and Dunkirk. This could be a useful place to stay before or after crossing the English Channel while on holiday in France. The review tells us that Marie, the owner, wants to do everything she can to make the property more accessible so is open to any suggestions for improvements.
Changing Places Awareness Day
To celebrate Changing Places Awareness Day we are highlighting some of the reviews of accessible toilets from our amazing reviewers.
Walkingwithwheels has shared their review of a Changing Places toilet in the Friary Shopping Centre in Guilford. The shopping centre is near the bus station, a convenient place to find an accessible loo. There are lots of helpful photographs to show the layout and facilities too.
Scooterreviews has been reviewing the Changing Places toilet in Kings Cross Railway Station. The review highlights some problems with the toilet locking system, which will be fed back to the venue, so that - hopefully - they will be able to make improvements. There are also lots of pictures within this review which give a clearer idea of what to expect when you get there. Super helpful for anyone travelling through the busy Kings Cross!
Review of the month
This month’s review was written by Scooterreviews about Changing Places toilet at King's Cross station. Thank you for your helpful review and photographs. Reviews of accessible toilets are a great reminder of how important accessible toilets are and important part of someone's visit, especially when it comes to travelling with confidence.
