May Review Roundup

The front entrance of SW3 in Glasgow

Welcome to the May review roundup. This month we have a wide selection of reviews from our amazing communitys. Thanks to our volunteers, we can provide accurate, trusted disabled access information which to help you plan your next day out andgive you the confidence to try somewhere new.

Exploring the outdoors

We’ve e received some brilliant reviews of different outdoor places and spaces that our volunteer reviewers have enjoyed exploring. Gordon Scally has been visiting Firkin Point In Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park with his friends and family. . Although there are no specific accessible parking spaces at this outdoor access area, Gordon recommends trying a few of the level access walks which would be accessible to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. There are accessible toilets available using a RADAR key.

Another fantastic review comes from SillySally who gave her experience of Chester Zoo five stars, mentioning that there are standard and Changing Places toilets. According to SillySally’s review, there is also a new part of the zoo which has recently been developed and is particularly wheelchair accessible, withviewing platforms and windows, which are specifically at wheelchair height. It's great to hear that accessibility has been well thought out in this new part of the zoo.

WheelyP has sent us a review of Blackwood Forrest and cafe in Winchester. He comments on the  of the forest paths. “This is great for dogs and kids of all ages, I use a Triride adaptation on my wheelchair and I could independently get around the forest.” He mentions the café near the forest has great access to enjoy a bite to eat, and included fantastic photos to show the space available in the cafe as well as the accessibility of the forest paths.

Things to see and do

KirbyLover329 did their first review on Euan’s Guide after visiting Cumbernauld Theatre at Lanternhouse! They regularly attend the theatre café for an autistic adult coffee group, and they mention the accessibility of the café and toilets, and how this makes them feel more reassured about their visit being a success. “I always enjoy every visit I have to the Cumbernauld Theatre cafe because it is always so accessible. As someone with hidden disabilities I always worry about using disabled toilets but I have never had an issue once with this venue. The food in the cafe is very well priced as well. The venue is easily accessible via public transport both by bus and by train from Motherwell train station.” This sounds like a great place to meet up for an accessible day out with friends and family. Thank you KirkbyLover329 for your first review!

Bilbao did their first review on Euan’s Guide of King John’s Castle in Limerick Ireland. They comment on how well the staff dealt with their access requirements and made them feel truly welcome, while also mentioning the clear layout of the venue which helped them to find where to go. The gift shop has a great selection of gifts and trinkets available to everyone, and is well laid out making it easier for anyone with a mobility aid to move around easily. This sounds like a fantastic family day out if you are in the area. Thank you Bilbao for your first review - we can't wait to see where you're off to next!

Euan’s Guide Ambassador Kempster66 volunteered at the Yardworks Festival at SWG3 in Glasgow. She was very impressed with the standard of accessibility at the venue and was able to participate and enjoy the festival as a volunteer. “Being in a powerchair I was not restricted in any way as it was all on the flat. One of the areas was a wee bit bumpy, but the art was so amazing, I didn't care. Wheelchair lift up to the terrace.” We’re glad to hear this sounds like a really positive experience.

Accessible accommodation

The Homelands Trust is always a popular choice within the Euan’s Guide community when looking for accessible accommodation. Thank you IreneandTony for sharing your review of Masney Lodge, which is well equipped with any mobility equipment on request. Staff are always very welcoming and helpful to all guests to make sure that they have an enjoyable stay. The Paxton Centre can provide lovely food for lunch, and the local shops and community are a few minutes’ walk away.
