    About

More than two hundred years ago, the Assembly Rooms was created as a place for people to meet, talk, do business and be entertained. From royal banquets to Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows, and from ceilidhs to readings by Dickens, Scott and Thackeray, not only has this beautiful 18th century building survived the centuries, but its purpose continues to this day. Following a major redevelopment completed in 2012, this iconic Georgian venue has been transformed into spaces fit for contemporary use, but with their architectural significance preserved and enhanced. Restored to their former glory, our Ballroom, Music Hall, Drawing Rooms and Crush Hall are providing elegant backdrops for formal and informal occasions, day and night.

    Beautiful venue terrible view

Entry to the venue is straightforward, level access. A member of staff met us at the front and took us to the elevator then to the platform and this was really helpful. The platform was at the back and separate from the crowd. It all seemed great until the venue filled up and we realised that we were below head level so couldn’t see a thing. On the plus side, the accessible toilet was nearby and I managed one doughnut 🎉

    Fringe visit

Visited in the evening for a show at The Front Room (this is basically a block of cargo containers welded together and situated on-the-street). There was a side entrance ramp for access which was tight, but manageable for my electric scooter. Very intimate seating of app 70, on 3 sides of floor-height stage. No actual wheelchair-sized gaps to fit the scooter in, so I had to reverse into a gap at one of the 2 corners of seating. No toilets in there. Accessible toilets are in the actual Assembly Rooms. Extremely friendly staff keep you right for both accessing the toilets and the Front Room venue.

Super helpful staff and an amazing experience

From the moment I arrived at the venue, I was guided by friendly staff every step of the way. The music room is via a short lift journey. A member of staff them made the crowd part so that I could be escorted to my wheelchair spot like a VIP. Located at the front, I was immersed in the show from start to finish!
